Hearing protection is rated by NRR – Noise Reduction Rating, in decibels. Higher is more reduction, and fit matters as much as the number, because a poor seal leaks sound regardless of rating.
Electronic muffs amplify quiet sound and cut off sharp noise, so conversation and range commands stay audible between shots. They need batteries; they still protect passively when switched off.
Gunfire is impulse noise, and exposure is cumulative and permanent. Doubling up – plugs under muffs – is normal practice indoors and around muzzle brakes.
