The Steiner Optics 2343 7X50 Navigator is a pair of binoculars, 7×50.
The first number is magnification and the second is the objective diameter in millimetres: 7x makes the subject appear 7 times closer, through 50mm front lenses. Dividing one by the other gives the exit pupil, here about 7.1mm – the width of the beam of light reaching your eye, which is what governs how usable they are at dusk.
Higher magnification narrows the field of view and magnifies hand shake as well as the subject. Beyond about 10x most people need a rest or a tripod to hold a steady image.
