The FN America / FN Herstal Fn 309 Mrd is a single action in 9mm with a 3.8" barrel and 20-round capacity plus one chambered.
A barrel this short keeps the pistol easy to conceal and carry, at the cost of some velocity and a shorter sight radius. The slide is cut for a red dot, so an optic mounts without machining. The optic and, on most models, a mounting plate are bought separately, and the plate has to match the footprint your optic uses.
The 9mm is commonly chosen for range practice, competition and carry. The most widely available centerfire handgun round, which keeps practice affordable and ammunition easy to find. The manufacturer markets it as a defensive handgun; whether it suits you is a decision to make with your own training and requirements in mind.
