How to Clean a Rifle, Shotgun, and Handgun

Most guns are not worn out by shooting. They are worn out by neglect, or by cleaning done badly — and of the two, bad cleaning does more damage. A steel rod dragged carelessly through a bore has ruined more accuracy than any amount of honest use.

Here is how to clean a rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun properly, what you actually need, and the handful of mistakes worth avoiding.

Before anything else

Unload the firearm. Remove the magazine, open the action, and physically look and feel inside the chamber. Then do it again. No ammunition anywhere on the bench. Every cleaning accident in existence started with someone who was certain the gun was empty.

Work in ventilation. Solvents are solvents.

What you need

  • A one-piece coated rod or a pull-through cable — sized to the caliber. Avoid segmented rods where the joints can catch and score the bore.
  • A bore guide for rifles. Cheap, and it keeps the rod centered so it does not damage the throat and crown.
  • Bronze brushes and a jag in the right caliber
  • Patches sized to fit snugly but not so tight they stick
  • Solvent for powder fouling, and a separate copper solvent if you shoot jacketed bullets heavily
  • Lubricant — a proper gun oil or grease, not whatever is under the sink
  • Nylon brushes, picks, and rags for the action and exterior

What fouling actually looks like

Worth knowing before you start, because the difference between “dirty” and “damaged” is the difference between ten minutes of work and a new barrel.

Carbon fouling

Flat, dull, sooty black or dark grey. Heaviest in the throat just ahead of the chamber, on the bolt face, and around the gas system on a semi-auto. It looks like the bore has been smoked. On a patch it comes off as grey-black smears that get lighter with each pass — that lightening is the signal it is coming out.

Hard carbon in the throat is different: a rough, crusty ring that resists brushing and needs a dedicated carbon solvent and patience. It is still fouling, not damage.

Copper fouling

Orange, reddish, or bronze streaks lying in the grooves, running the length of the bore. Under a bore light it looks like thin metallic tiger stripes against the steel — brighter and warmer in colour than anything else you will see in there.

The unmistakable test: run a patch with a copper solvent and leave it the time the bottle specifies. If it comes out blue or blue-green, that is dissolved copper. Keep going until patches stop turning blue. That colour change is the single most useful diagnostic in bore cleaning.

Shotgun fouling

Different again — plastic wad residue leaves a dull, slightly waxy grey film, and it builds up ahead of the chamber and in the choke. Combined with powder residue it dulls the whole bore. It wipes out readily with solvent.

Fouling versus damage — how to tell

This is the part that matters, particularly if you are looking at a used gun.

  • Fouling sits on top of the metal. Damage is in it. Clean the bore properly, then look again with good light.
  • If the dark marks disappear after solvent and brushing, it was fouling. The gun is fine.
  • If small dark craters remain in the same places, that is pitting — corrosion that has eaten into the steel. It does not clean out because there is nothing left to remove.
  • Rifling should have crisp edges. Lands that look rounded or washed out, especially in the first few inches ahead of the chamber, mean throat erosion rather than dirt.
  • A shadow line or ring that runs all the way around the bore and does not move when you rotate the barrel is a bulge — a fired obstruction. That is not fouling and not repairable.

The rule that matters most: clean from the breech

Whenever the design allows it, push the rod in from the chamber end and out the muzzle, in the direction the bullet travels.

The crown — the very edge of the muzzle — is the last thing touching the bullet as it leaves, and damage there wrecks accuracy immediately and permanently. Dragging a rod back and forth across it is the fastest way to ruin an otherwise good barrel.

Cleaning a rifle

  1. Confirm it is unloaded. Remove the bolt if possible, and fit the bore guide.
  2. Push a solvent-wet patch through, breech to muzzle. Let it work for the time the solvent specifies.
  3. Run a bronze brush through several full passes — all the way out the muzzle before reversing, never changing direction inside the bore.
  4. Push dry patches through until they come out clean.
  5. If patches keep coming out blue-green, that is copper. Use a copper solvent and follow its instructions exactly, including how long to leave it.
  6. Finish with a lightly oiled patch, then a dry one — you want a film, not a puddle.
  7. Clean the bolt, the locking lugs, and the chamber face. Wipe the exterior with an oiled cloth.

How often? Less than most people think. Many rifles shoot their best slightly fouled and need a few rounds to settle after a deep clean. Clean when accuracy drops off, before long storage, and after exposure to rain or mud.

Cleaning a shotgun

Shotgun bores are far more forgiving than rifle bores, but shotguns have their own fouling problem — the action.

  1. Confirm unloaded. Field strip per the manual.
  2. Run a solvent-wet swab or brush through the bore, then dry patches.
  3. Remove the choke tubes. Clean the threads in the barrel and on the tube, then re-install with choke grease. Tubes left in place seize, and freeing a seized tube can mean a gunsmith.
  4. On a gas gun, clean the piston and gas system. This is where semi-autos actually fail, not in the bore. Carbon buildup here causes the cycling problems people blame on ammunition.
  5. On an inertia gun, keep the bolt and recoil spring clean and correctly lubricated. Over-oiling attracts grit.
  6. Wipe everything down, especially after a wet or salt-marsh hunt.

Cleaning a handgun

  1. Confirm unloaded, magazine out. Field strip per the manual.
  2. Brush and patch the bore. On a revolver, clean each chamber and the forcing cone as well.
  3. Clean the breech face, extractor, and feed ramp — carbon here causes malfunctions.
  4. Clean the frame rails and slide grooves.
  5. Lubricate lightly at the rails, barrel hood, and the points your manual identifies. A carry gun should be lightly oiled, not dripping — excess oil collects lint and can migrate into ammunition.
  6. Clean magazines separately. Do not oil the inside of a magazine.

Carry guns deserve more frequent attention than range guns, because pocket lint, sweat, and body oil are corrosive.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Reversing a brush inside the bore. Push it all the way out before pulling back.
  • Over-lubricating. Oil is a dirt magnet, and in cold weather too much can slow an action.
  • Leaving copper solvent in longer than directed. Aggressive solvents can attack the bore if abused.
  • Cleaning rods without a guide. The throat and crown are exactly what you cannot repair.
  • Storing a gun in a foam-lined case long-term. Foam holds moisture against steel. For storage, a cabinet with a dehumidifier beats a sealed case.
  • Ignoring the chamber on a rifle. A dirty chamber causes extraction problems that look like ammunition faults.

Dust, sand, and the over-lubrication trap

Dust causes more stoppages than neglect does, and the instinct it triggers in most shooters makes it worse.

Oil and grease attract airborne grit and hold it against moving surfaces. Add fine dust to a well-oiled bolt carrier and you have not lubricated it — you have made a grinding compound and packed it into the exact places you needed to stay clean. This is the single most common maintenance mistake in dusty conditions, and it is committed by people trying to do the right thing.

Fine dust is also worse than coarse sand. Sand you can see and shake out. Talcum-grade dust gets into the trigger group, under the extractor, and into the gas system, and it turns to paste the moment it meets lubricant.

What actually works:

  • Run lighter, not heavier. A thin film on bearing surfaces beats a wet gun in dust. Wet is for wet climates.
  • Remove grit before you add oil. Brush and wipe first. Oiling over dust just distributes it.
  • Grease where there is sliding contact, oil where there is not. Grease stays put; it also holds grit, so use it deliberately and sparingly.
  • Check the extractor and the trigger group. Both collect dust invisibly and both produce failures that look like ammunition problems.
  • Wipe the bolt carrier between range sessions in dusty conditions, even if you are not doing a full clean.

None of this is exotic. It is the standard lesson from anywhere with fine airborne dust — desert ranges, dove fields in September, ATV trails, and every arid deployment environment of the last twenty-five years. If a rifle runs clean and dry in that, it will run anywhere.

Storage in a dry climate

Dry climates are kinder to steel than humid ones — low humidity means less rust, which is one advantage of the desert Southwest over the Gulf Coast. What a dry climate does not spare you is heat. A gun or a box of ammunition stored in a garage or a vehicle goes through enormous temperature swings, which degrades ammunition faster than most people expect and can affect stocks and finishes.

Store firearms inside the conditioned part of the house where you can, in a safe or storage cabinet, and use locks where appropriate.

Common questions

Do I need to clean a new gun before shooting it?

Yes — new firearms often ship with heavy preservative grease that is not a lubricant. Strip it and lubricate properly before the first range trip.

Is a bore snake enough?

For a quick field clean, yes. For removing copper or heavy carbon, no. Think of it as maintenance between real cleanings.

Can I use household oil?

Don’t. Many household oils gum up over time or fail to protect steel. Purpose-made gun oil is inexpensive and formulated for the job.
