Suppressor ownership has changed. The $200 tax is gone on suppressors, approval times have collapsed, and NFA background checks in July 2026 ran more than double the year before. A lot of people are about to own their first can — and most of the maintenance advice floating around is either written for the wrong type of suppressor or is actively harmful.
Almost all of it comes down to one question, and getting it wrong is how people destroy an expensive item.
First: is yours serviceable or sealed?
Suppressors fall into two categories, and they need opposite treatment.
- Sealed (welded) cans. The baffle stack is permanently fixed inside the tube. Most centerfire rifle suppressors are built this way. These are not meant to be opened, and you cannot open one without destroying it.
- User-serviceable cans. The baffle stack comes out for cleaning. Nearly every rimfire suppressor is built this way because it has to be, and many pistol suppressors are too.
Check your manufacturer’s documentation before you touch anything. Not a forum post, not a video — the manual for your specific model. If the manufacturer says sealed, it is sealed, and no amount of soaking will change that.
Rimfire suppressors: the ones that genuinely need cleaning
If you own one suppressor that demands regular attention, it is your .22.
Rimfire ammunition is filthy in a specific way. The bullets are unjacketed lead coated in wax lubricant, and the powder burns dirty. That combination deposits lead, wax and carbon inside the can in quantity. Left alone it does not stay soft — it packs, hardens, and fuses the baffles into a solid block. That is carbon lock, and at that point you own a paperweight that still requires a tax stamp.
The common guidance is every 300 to 500 rounds, and that is a sound default. Manufacturers vary, though, and yours is the number that counts — SilencerCo, for instance, publishes roughly 1,000 rounds for the Sparrow 22, while other makers are more conservative. Ammunition matters as much as the can: cheap bulk-pack subsonic fouls far faster than clean-burning match ammunition.
If you have no manual to hand, clean at 300 and look at what came out. That tells you more about your interval than any general figure — including this one.
What you need
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- The disassembly tool that came with your can, if it uses one
- A cleaning method: ultrasonic cleaner, a dedicated suppressor solvent, or the vinegar-and-peroxide dip (see the warnings below)
- Nylon or brass picks and brushes — never steel, which scars sealing surfaces and the baffle geometry that makes the can work
- Shop rags you are willing to throw away, and a container you will never use for anything else
- High-temperature anti-seize for reassembly
The procedure
- Confirm the can is unloaded of any obstruction and off the host. Work with the firearm out of the room entirely — there is no reason for both to be on the bench.
- Disassemble per the manual. Baffles usually stack in one orientation only. If yours are not indexed, mark the order as you remove them — a stack reassembled backwards will not perform and can cause a strike.
- Knock off the loose material first. Tap each baffle out over a rag and pick out the heavy chunks dry. Soaking works far better on a part that is not already caked.
- Soak or ultrasonic. Give it 20 to 30 minutes, then check. Repeat rather than leaving parts submerged for hours — long soaks are where aluminum gets damaged.
- Scrub the softened residue with nylon or brass. Pay attention to the bore of each baffle and the cone surfaces; that is where build-up affects performance first.
- Rinse and dry completely. Compressed air if you have it. Any trapped moisture becomes corrosion, and any trapped solvent will flash off unpleasantly on the first shot.
- Inspect while it is apart. This is the only time you will see the inside. Look for cracks, erosion around the bores, and any strike marks.
- Reassemble in the correct order and orientation, with a light film of anti-seize on the threads. Snug, not gorilla-tight.
- Verify the bore is clear by looking through it before you mount it. Every time.
Budget an hour the first time. It takes fifteen minutes once you have done it twice.
Match the method to the metal
This is where manufacturer guidance stops being optional. The cleaning method that is perfectly safe on one baffle material will ruin another, and baffle material is not something you can identify by eye.

Note what this rules out: if your rimfire can has aluminum baffles, the ultrasonic cleaner and the vinegar dip are both off the table. That is the combination most likely to be recommended to you online, and it is the one most likely to destroy a lightweight rimfire suppressor. Solvent and a nylon brush instead.
About “The Dip”
You will be told to soak baffles in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. It does dissolve lead effectively. Two warnings that usually get left off:
- It attacks aluminum, and it is acidic enough to be wrong for titanium too. Vinegar is an acid. If your baffles are aluminum — common in lightweight rimfire cans — an extended soak will eat them. Know your baffle material before it goes anywhere near this.
- The used solution contains dissolved lead compounds. That is toxic waste, not sink water. Handle it with gloves, work in ventilation, and dispose of it properly.
It works. It is not the low-risk default it gets presented as.
Centerfire rifle cans: mostly leave them alone
This surprises people, but a 5.56 or 7.62 suppressor is effectively self-cleaning. It runs hot enough that carbon does not accumulate the way rimfire fouling does, and jacketed bullets do not shed lead into the baffles.
Do not try to open a sealed rifle can. There is nothing serviceable inside, and forcing it destroys a registered item.
Maintenance is limited to the outside and the interface:
- Wipe the exterior. Let it cool first — these get genuinely hot enough to burn you well after firing.
- Keep the mounting threads clean and check them for damage.
- Confirm it is still tight. Suppressors back off under recoil more often than people expect.
- Inspect the bore periodically for signs of a baffle strike (below).
Pistol cans: the booster is the failure point
A suppressor on a tilting-barrel pistol needs a booster — a Nielsen device or piston — to let the action cycle under the added weight. That assembly is where nearly all pistol suppressor problems originate, and it is the part owners forget exists.
Unburnt powder, lead and carbon collect around the piston and spring. As it fouls, the piston stops moving freely, and the gun starts short-stroking, failing to eject, or failing to return to battery. People blame the ammunition or the pistol. It is almost always the booster.
Clean the piston and spring every few hundred rounds. It is a five-minute job:
- Unthread the rear mount and separate the piston, spring and housing. Note which way the piston faces — it only works one way round.
- Degrease all three parts properly. Carbon here is baked on, so give solvent time to work rather than scrubbing dry.
- Clean the inside of the housing where the piston rides, not just the piston itself. That bore is what actually binds.
- Dry, then reassemble with a light film of lubricant — light, because oil in a booster attracts the exact fouling you just removed.
- Test it before mounting. Press the piston in by hand; it should travel smoothly and spring back briskly. Sluggish means it is not clean yet.
If your pistol can is user-serviceable, the baffle stack also collects lead when shooting unjacketed ammunition. Treat it like a rimfire can in that case.
Carbon lock: the failure that costs you the can
Separate from baffle fouling, carbon welds the suppressor to whatever it is mounted on. Heat cycling bakes residue into the threads until the can and the muzzle device become one object.
Three things prevent it, and they cost nothing:
- Use a high-temperature anti-seize on the threads. Ordinary gun oil burns off and does nothing. Nickel or copper based anti-seize is what belongs here.
- Take it off regularly. A can left mounted for a year of shooting is the one that will not come off. Removing and reseating it periodically is the whole prevention strategy.
- Keep the mount clean. Quick-detach mounts have locking surfaces that foul; brush them out when you take the can off.
If one is already stuck, resist the pipe wrench. Heat, penetrating oil and patience win more often, and crushing a tube turns a stuck can into a destroyed one.
Baffle strikes: what to look for
A baffle strike is a bullet clipping the inside of the suppressor instead of passing cleanly through. Causes include a loose mount, a bent or misaligned muzzle device, worn threads, or a barrel and can that were never concentric.
Signs worth stopping for:
- A sudden change in sound, especially louder or sharper than normal
- An unexplained shift in point of impact
- Visible marks, gouges or metal shavings when you look through the bore
- Any bulge, crack or deformation in the tube
Stop shooting and contact the manufacturer. A damaged can can fail catastrophically on a subsequent round, and continuing to shoot it turns a repairable item into scrap — and puts your face behind it.
Lead is the part people skip
Cleaning a rimfire or pistol suppressor means handling concentrated lead residue. This is the genuine health hazard in the whole process, and it gets almost no attention.
- Wear nitrile gloves and work in ventilation, ideally outdoors or in a garage with the door open.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while working, and wash your hands with cold water and a lead-removing soap afterwards — hot water opens pores.
- Do not clean suppressors on a kitchen counter, and keep the work away from children and pets.
- Dispose of used solution and contaminated media properly rather than down the sink.
When it needs the manufacturer — and what that means legally
Damage, carbon lock you cannot break, a baffle strike, or a can that is simply not performing — all of that goes back to the manufacturer. A few points specific to NFA items that are worth knowing before you box anything up.
Sending a suppressor for repair is not a transfer — but file the Form 5 anyway. ATF does not treat temporarily conveying an NFA firearm to a manufacturer or gunsmith for repair as a transfer, so a Form 5 is not strictly required. ATF nonetheless recommends submitting one and getting it approved before the item leaves your hands, precisely so there is no appearance that an unlawful transfer took place. Form 5 has an “Other” option, and repair is a valid reason. It is free, and it removes the argument entirely.
If you do not file one, keep documentation instead: a record identifying the item, showing the purpose was repair, and noting the expected turnaround.
The part that catches people out: replacement parts are themselves silencers
This is the one worth reading carefully, because the natural next thought after finding a damaged baffle is “I will order a new baffle.”
Under federal law a silencer part is legally a silencer. Per ATF guidance, replacement components are themselves “silencers” as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(24), and they have to be registered and transferred like any other silencer. A qualified manufacturer can replace internal parts as part of a repair — provided the suppressor keeps the same dimensions and caliber and the serial number is untouched — but an unlicensed owner buying and fitting a replacement baffle is not doing maintenance, they are in possession of an unregistered silencer.
The practical line is clean and easy to hold:
- Cleaning your own suppressor and reassembling its own parts: fine. That is all this article describes.
- Installing replacement parts you bought: not fine. That goes to the manufacturer.
Replacing the tube is more serious still. The serialized outer tube is the registered item, and ATF has described replacing it as so significant that it amounts to making a new silencer. That has to go through registration rather than being treated as a repair. Work that leaves the tube intact does not trigger this.
Contact the manufacturer before shipping. They will have a service process, an RMA, and instructions. Following it protects the warranty and the paperwork trail at the same time.
And do not have a non-licensed third party do machine work on a registered item.
This section reflects published ATF guidance on silencer repair, but agency positions get revised and this is a summary rather than legal advice. If you are facing anything beyond routine cleaning, ask the manufacturer first — they deal with this daily — and consult a firearms attorney if real money or a damaged registered item is involved.

These are typical figures drawn from manufacturer guidance across the industry. Where your manual disagrees with this table, the manual wins — it is written for your baffle material, your baffle geometry and your warranty.
The short version
Know whether yours is sealed or serviceable, and never force the answer. Clean rimfire cans on a schedule or they will seize solid. Leave centerfire rifle cans alone apart from the threads and the mount. Clean the booster on pistol cans before you blame the gun. Use anti-seize and take the can off periodically. Treat lead residue as the hazard it is.
Do that and a suppressor will outlast the rifle it is mounted on.
