The ATN Thor 5 Thermal BLZ is a night vision device.
Night vision amplifies the light that is already there – starlight, moonlight, or an infrared illuminator. Unlike thermal it needs some light to work with, and it shows a scene the way the eye would rather than as a heat map.
Generation is the shorthand for tube performance, and within a generation the tube's own figures (signal-to-noise, line pairs per millimetre) matter more than the generation label. A digital unit uses a sensor instead of an image tube and behaves differently again.
Bright light damages image intensifier tubes. Do not switch one on in daylight or point it at a light source.
Thermal and night vision devices are export-controlled under US law. They are sold freely within the United States and may not leave it – that includes carrying one abroad on a hunting trip. Check current rules before travelling with it.
