A carbon scraper removes the hard, baked-on carbon that solvent alone does not shift – the ring on a bolt tail, the face of a bolt carrier, the inside of a suppressor mount.
It works because it is shaped to the part and softer than it. Improvised scraping with a screwdriver or a knife takes metal with the carbon, and on a bolt face that is not recoverable.
