The Dead Down Wind DDW Defend Bear Spray is bear spray.
Bear spray is a deterrent for bears. It is registered with the EPA as a pesticide, which is a different classification from personal-defence pepper spray, and it is formulated and tested for that purpose.
It is used differently too: a wide cloud is laid between you and the animal at a range of several yards, rather than a stream aimed at a target. Wind matters a great deal – a cloud can come back on you.
Carry it where it can be reached in seconds. In a pack it is of no use. Check the expiry date; propellant pressure falls over time, and an expired canister may not throw a proper cloud.
Some parks and jurisdictions have rules about carriage, and it cannot fly in cabin or checked baggage. Check before you travel.
