A cooling towel is wetted, wrung out and snapped to start it working; it then cools by evaporation while it stays damp. That means it works best in dry heat and least in humidity, where there is nowhere for the water to go.

Re-wet it when it stops feeling cold rather than waiting for it to dry stiff, and rinse it after a day out – they hold onto sweat and salt.
