The Sig Sauer Zulu 10 HDX is a pair of binoculars, 12×50.
The first number is magnification and the second is the objective diameter in millimetres: 12x makes the subject appear 12 times closer, through 50mm front lenses. Dividing one by the other gives the exit pupil, here about 4.2mm – the width of the beam of light reaching your eye, which is what governs how usable they are at dusk.
Higher magnification narrows the field of view and magnifies hand shake as well as the subject. Beyond about 10x most people need a rest or a tripod to hold a steady image.
