The Wheeler Engineering Recoil Pad Installation is a recoil pad.
A recoil pad fits to the butt of the stock and compresses under recoil. Spreading the same impulse over a longer time is what reduces the peak force reaching the shoulder – the energy does not change, the rate does. Softer compounds absorb more and wear faster; harder ones last longer and mount more easily on a gun that is carried a lot.
A pad also changes length of pull, since it adds its own thickness to the back of the stock. That is why pads are sold in different thicknesses, and why a thicker pad can be used deliberately to fit a longer-armed shooter.
Pads are either ground to fit a specific stock or supplied as a slip-on. A precision-fit pad is cut for one make and model of stock; a slip-on stretches over whatever is there and is the safer buy if you are unsure.
